Bastardised

We featured Bunch design last week, and now we are featuring them again this week, but more specifically about their latest book, Bastardised, which celebrates their global identity project, born in 2007, out of Bunch’s need to re-brand. They approached designers and image-makers they admired and asked them to produce a “visual reaction” to their logo, sign it and return it. The resulting ‘Bunchisms’ were incorporated into their stationery with care taken to choose relevant themes for the applications.

The pull of being able to create a piece of work not involving clients attracted international artists, designers and illustrators. These included Malcolm Garrett, Jonathan Ellery, Paul Davis, Marian Bantjes, Stefan Sagmeister, James Goggin, Carlos Segura, Build, Paul Insect, David Quay, Vince Frost, Si Scott and Julian Morey. The project was also included the 2009 D&AD annual.

The limited edition (1500), 208 page hardback book presents 289 ‘Bunchisms’ specially selected from 750 contributions, with a foreword by cultural writer and author Liz Farrelly.

Bastardised is available from Tomorrow at:

Westfield

Today sees the opening of Europe's largest shopping centre/ mall/ experience. Based in west London, it's aim is to rival Bond Street and the like, and is meant to be the hub of Luxury shopping, a place of aspiration as well as convenience. It has cost an estimated 1.6bn pounds to develop and has had the expertise of legendary retail queen, Mary Portas.
With all this in mind, I think it has to be said, the decision to use the Australian group's own company logo for this project was perhaps a bit of a mistake, at least in my mind. This bright red logotype alone, is quite ugly in my view, and is more fitting of a agricultural company selling tractors, than for a luxury retail brand. It also sits very uncomfortably with the rest of the branding. Surely, you would have thought they would have invested a lot into their branding, this being a brand dependent industry. Their online presence is also fairly poor.
Perhaps I am on my own on this one. perhaps I missed something. What do you think?

You can find out more about the project here

Venice

You'll notice that the O-L has been quiet the last few days, which I can tell you, is owing to a little weekend visit to Vivaldi's home town of Venice. Famed for far too many things to talk about here, including its famous Gondolas, itsVenetion masked balls, the Venice Film Festival, the Art Biennale, its maze-like layout, its teaming tourists, its overpriced coffee, and of course, its fake handbag dealers, Venice is quite an an amazing place to visit as well as incredibly inspiring, especially if you get some time to ponder over some iconic art at the Peggy Guggenheim collection.
In short, if you have never been to Venice the advice is to find a way to go!

Anyway, you will be glad to know our programme continues now with some tasty creative treats...

Barcinski & Jeanjean

An interesting portfolio site from Mark Barcinski & Adrien Jeanjean using 'anaglyphic' magic (as well as some Papervision). Very well done and very entertaining, the only problem I had with it is that I was concentrating more on the site than their actual work.
